Machine translationA Sun Has Set. Avraham Erez A great, radiant sun has set above our heads. We still stand dazzled and deafened by the great national misfortune that has struck us. As if wounded, the heart cramps with pain and the lips whisper helplessly: he too... Bialik is no more! And while these terrible words are spoken, somewhere the ship carrying the dead Bialik from Trieste to the Land of Israel is rocking — sky above, water below, two seas bound together, and in the middle Bialik's heart, a third sea, our Jewish sea of tears and comfort, which has suddenly dried up... And when? At such a time? At such a thirsty, burning time, in such a desert-heavy drought!.. O, great God of vengeance! "Will You make a full end of us?"... And just now, when his sun has set and its bloody rays dip into the sea, only now do people look around in amazement: wonder upon wonder! Where did such a sun actually come from to our exhausted, dried-up people? From whom do such magic sounds come to us? Who struck the desert rock and opened springs? "Did we merit Bialik from ownerless chance, or perhaps did he come to us by [unclear]?"... Bialik himself tried to hint at this wondrous phenomenon. In his splendid sketch "Our Young Poetry" he compares the spring of our creativity to the biblical, mysterious "Well of Miriam", which suddenly reveals itself and hides itself, vanishes for generations and gushes up again after hundreds of years with the enormous force of held-back water... And so the eternal spring of Jewish creation stretches, with breaks of hundreds of years, from Moses to Maimonides, from King David to the prophet Isaiah, and from Rabbi Yehuda Halevi to Bialik. And now — woe to us — the living spring has suddenly hidden itself from us, and who knows for how many generations? Heinrich Heine said of Rabbi Yehuda Halevi that when God created his beautiful soul, He gave it a kiss. Bialik too received a gift from the Shekhinah: a wondrous spell. He would take an extinguished word, a dead word, and breathe his magic spell into it, and the old, worn-out word would come back to life, rise in resurrection of the dead. He knew the secret of rejuvenating the word, and therefore Bialik was the redeeming angel of the Hebrew language, and that is exactly why he was also the great collector, the faithful guardian of the old sources, for he knew how many fresh, many-coloured flowers can grow from every rotten seed. The old word would shine with seven suns in Bialik's mouth and — suddenly — not words but pearls pour out, diamonds, whole treasures... And Bialik stands and calls to the downcast Jews of the market, of the beit midrash and of the street: Come here, Jews — enemies have invented that we are poor — I have found your treasures! And when Bialik would sometimes tear himself out of his treasure pits and see the people in its bareness and poverty, in exilic degradation and rejection, he would then storm, cry out and rage: "Surely the people is grass, it has dried up like wood..." Jews heard the harsh words of rebuke and accepted them with love, because Bialik was Jewish through and through: he did not borrow from others; he grew out of purely Jewish culture, his grief was made of Jewish suffering and his anger of prophetic zeal. Bialik did not complete any universities, but at his radiant spring the yeshiva student and the university student met — the simple Jew too felt the direct connection between "In the City of Slaughter" and the tear-soaked songs of "By the Rivers of Babylon", from "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people" to "Let your hands be strong", and Jews were proud that the golden chain is not broken... Before our eyes a golden epoch of Jewish history is passing. One by one its last flames go out and its proud pillars fall. Not we, the children of twilight, will be able to appreciate and understand this epoch. But upon us has fallen the hard fate of "standing at the head" and watching in terror as great spirits pass away — while the generation of hunger, nakedness and revolt approaches...

Machine translationThe impression in town of the death of Chaim Nachman Bialik. The terrible news of the sudden death of the great poet reached us on Friday, 6 July, through the Warsaw newspapers. A deep mourning gripped the whole Jewish population. On the building of the local Tarbut institutions the blue-and-white flag was hung out, draped in black. The committee of the local branch of the "Hitachdut" at once called a mourning meeting, which was attended by more than 40 representatives of all the Zionist groupings from right to left. The meeting was opened by Mr. A. Erez. In moving words he spoke of the great national misfortune that had occurred and proposed creating a mourning committee which should honour the memory of the great departed in a worthy manner. A warm and deeply moving speech was given by Reb Chaim Feldman, who pointed to the threatening situation of a people from whom its leaders are taken. He called for soul-searching and for drawing closer together in the Zionist camp. Also speaking were Messrs. Y. L. Meshel, M. Kaplan, A. Y. Goldberg, A. Israelit, A. Bresky, M. Gorbaty, M. Birnbaum and Y. Zelenetsky, who put forward a series of proposals on how to perpetuate the memory of the great poet. The meeting also sent a telegram of condolence to the Central Committee of Tarbut in Warsaw with the following content: "We share in the national mourning for the death of the mighty one of Israel, the poet of wrath and redemption." A mourning committee was elected to honour the memory of Ch. N. Bialik, which included Messrs.: A. Erez, B. Eidelman, A. Israelit, A. Bresky, M. Birnbaum, A. Goldberg, Grinzberg, M. Gorbaty, Glezer, M. Senel, Eliyahu Stavsky, Kaplan. The committee met at once in session and resolved: a) to arrange a mourning academy on the day of the funeral; b) to publish a special issue of the "Pruzhaner Shtime" devoted to the memory of Ch. N. Bialik; c) to call on the Jewish population to close shops and workshops on the day of the funeral; d) to take an active part in all central campaigns to be carried out among Polish Jewry to perpetuate the name of Ch. N. Bialik.

Machine translationAt Bialik's Grave. Yisrael-Chaim Bilecki. (A man lived and is no more — Bialik) Just yesterday, great poet, you sang out your songs, today dreadful death lies spread across your limbs. Your song has fallen silent and with it the sun has set, all stand at your grave soaked with sounds of mourning. A man was, and is no more, a great spirit, a hero, a giant, who burned with his word as with a red-hot spear. Like a wrathful prophet, and like a lovely, kind lord, he hated and kissed us both together and was quenched with our grief... And the grief of our people, what power can measure it, (and deeper still grows our tear when death comes for the best...) With radiant, great eyes he gazed into his soul, and like the mighty, great prophet, quarrelled with himself and with the world... In his poetry one hears roaring a resounding, thunderous cry, in which, deep down, lies hidden our mourning, our woe... And now H. N. Bialik has died, the great spirit, the hero, the giant, who burned with his word as with a red-hot spear...

Machine translationAppeal of the "Brit Ivrit Olamit" to the Jewish People after the Death of H. N. Bialik The central leadership of the "Brit Ivrit Olamit" (World Hebrew Union), in the persons of Dr. Zvi Zohar, Moshe Kleinman, Avraham Levinson and Dr. S. Davidovich, has published the following appeal through the J.T.A.: "The cedar of our literature has been cut down, the crown of our culture has fallen — Chaim Nachman Bialik is no more! Gone is the seer, the [unclear], the prince of the nation, the greatest of our poets, who sang to the people of Israel its mighty song of freedom and roused it to the struggle for liberation. Gone is the seer, the symbol of our national conscience, who carried in his heart all the sorrow and pain of the Jewish people and who, with endless love and compassion, watched over its fate. Extinguished is the pillar of fire that accompanied the wandering people on all its roads of exile and lit up with a heavenly glow the mists of its cruel existence. Endlessly great is the grief and pain of our orphaned Hebrew culture, which has lost its father, its spokesman and its pioneer. For Bialik was the master builder of our modern Hebrew culture. The foundation stones for the building of our culture Bialik hewed out of the ancient cultural layers of our historical past. Bialik, the master of collections, opened wide for us the treasures of our ancient culture and brought into our literature its best values, which had been forgotten or abandoned over long generations. Bialik, the artist of the word, enlivened the Hebrew language with old-new words and concepts; in his specific, genuinely Bialikian style he hammered out the cutting steel of biblical language and the fine precision of the Mishnaic style, and so strengthened the wall of the Hebrew language against the plague of the old Maskilic and modern florid rhetoric. Bialik was the teacher, the educator of the generation. H. N. Bialik. At the head of our national movement he placed cultural work, and at the head of culture — education, which is the axis and the root of our spiritual renaissance. Bialik was a tireless fighter for a complete Hebrew education, because only such an education prepares the generation for its mission of fulfilment and for our work of building. His view of education found its expression in the splendid children's literature that Bialik created, and in all his educational, publishing and public activity, at whose centre stood the Jewish child, the strength and the future of the people. But education is only one manifestation of our spiritual revival, which embraces all branches of our cultural life, the whole field of our national creativity. The eternal, immortal foundation of our national creativity is the Hebrew language. Hebrew creativity, which reveals itself in the place of its natural growth, in the Land of Israel, in all its various forms and shapes, has under the conditions of our life in exile shrunk to the bounds of Hebrew literature and the Hebrew book. With flaming zeal and stubbornness Bialik fought for a national language and for the spiritual sanctities of the people. At all congresses and conferences, gatherings and meetings in the Land of Israel and in the Diaspora, Bialik propagated and explained the principles of his teaching: building, Hebrew culture, and the observance of the practical commandments bound up with it. With all the force of his stormy spirit the poet fought against the petty Zionist idea that had lightly cut itself off from the Hebrew movement, against the shallow and spiritless conception of Zionism that plants a new exile in the Land of Israel, that brings into the country a torn and fragmented national body not united with a living soul of Hebrew culture. With burning anger the poet demanded redress for the wrong done to the Hebrew language and culture, and rebuked the national public figures who had denied the national sanctities and knocked out of the people's hands its only weapon in its last desperate struggle against the assimilation of exile. Both while living in Tel Aviv and during his travels among the Jewish communities of the Diaspora, the poet did not rest, and did not stop until the last day of his life calling on the leaders and public figures of the people to mobilise all forces in order to save the Jewish spirit from decline and apostasy, to strengthen the prestige of the Hebrew language and culture, to raise the honour of the Hebrew writer and the Hebrew book, to strengthen and support Hebrew creativity and to create a Hebrew cultural fund that would support all our cultural achievements and encourage the Jewish spirit to Hebrew creativity in all fields of culture. And this is the testament of our late leader, the president of our "Brit Ivrit Olamit" in the Land of Israel. Not only with words of lament and literature of mourning shall we pay honour to our great departed, but by fulfilling his will, and we shall carry out his testament, which was stamped with the blood of his heart and with the stamp of his life and his mighty deeds. And in order to set up an eternal monument to his great name, the creation of a Bialik Fund is proclaimed, a cultural fund whose task is to create conditions for the development and growth of Hebrew deed and Hebrew fulfilment. This fund will serve as a building fund for our language, culture and education, and will be the unshakeable fortress of our spiritual renaissance."

ישראל־חיים בילעצקי. ח. נ.
Machine translationYisrael-Chaim Biletzky. H. N. Bialik. (Sketches) H. N. Bialik, the prince of Hebrew poetry, is no more. "My heart" — was his last cry, and the heart of the nation was covered in mourning. Lately the hand of the destroying Satan has wrought havoc among us. We had not yet recovered from the tragic death of Arlosoroff; the heart still bled from the death of the faithful and devoted Zionist Leon Motzkin — and now the hand of cruel fate has touched the temple of Hebrew poetry. Bialik once sang: "In the very midst of my childhood I was left alone," and now the whole people sings: "In the very midst of the childhood of our redemption we were left orphaned." He appeared like a meteor, shining and passing, over the gloomy skies of Israel, shook the heart of the nation, soared to the heavens in his prophetic expression, stormed forth to free the captive — and fell silent forever, like a legend. Such is the way of a giant: dazzling, thundering, robbing his listeners of peace of mind, calling to freedom, to ascent, kindling a spark of rebellion — and at his death his disciples, filled with sorrow and dark grief, wander the roads in search of his spiritual heir. And then the mourning grows sevenfold, when the heir's steps are delayed... Bialik appeared at twilight, at a time of mixed boundaries, when the limping yesterday convulsed in death throes and tomorrow struggled to be born. Moments of blurred borders between "beginning and end, destruction and building, old age and youth" are always laden with oppressive greyness in the life of every people. And when the troubadour, the voice of the era, does not shine forth, a black and deep abyss opens its mouth to swallow the helpless generation. And who knows what the face of this generation of ours would have been, without the prophetic poetry of encouragement that burst forth like lava from a volcano from Bialik's throat. The pioneering enterprise at the start of its way found its poet in him when he appeared. And how much courage, how much creative pathos the poem "Blessing of the People" poured into the veins of those who strove upward: "If not the coping stones — only a foundation you laid — enough for you, my brothers, your toil is not in vain! Those who come will build and plaster and whitewash, now it is enough for us if the line is stretched"... A generation stretched on a cross of suffering, "the last of servitude and the first of redemption," absorbed into the depths of its soul "the voices of the Lord calling: Go up!" — and carries out the work of liberation on rocky soil, amid constant hardships, as a faithful emissary of the people. It is therefore no wonder that Bialik was so bound to the pioneering camp, to the movement of Zionist fulfilment. Exile life stood before him in all its baseness and abomination. Horrifying pictures of Israel's degradation we find in all his "Poems of Wrath." The dog, who was once a "king's son," felt on his bent back the crack of a whip calling to awakening, to renewal of life. And the body straightened, and saw the poet of wrath, and lent an attentive ear to his rock-shattering words, and knew: this is no time for ease... And the banner was raised with strength and valour, for Bialik's voice shook. Such is the power of the voice of an era: when it kindles a blaze it will not let go of it. And when it lights the fire there will be none to quench it... — — And Bialik paid for the blaze a great and enormous price, the price — of life. For a long time Bialik did not know which was preferable — the poetry of the individual or the poetry of the many? His soul, rich in sparks, more than once longed for solitude. The poet seeks quiet and rest. Solitude is a necessity of life for every rich, poetic soul. Weariness of life was a constant guest with Bialik. Then he secluded himself in his attic and sang the poetry of the individual. And how many-coloured, sparkling with a thousand rays of radiance, is this poetry. But — is solitude permitted at such a time? Is it not a sin to sing only the song of the soul in an hour of emergency for the nation? And Bialik understood: one must go out among the ranks of the people, unite them to carry out a gigantic enterprise, to sing the poetry of the many. And how wonderful is this fusion. On the contrary, just try to separate the poetry of the individual from the poetry of the many — can you? That is the greatness of a giant poet: the interweaving of his life into the life of his people to the point of fusion. Such was Bialik! When he appeared — strength and joy were poured into us. And at his death — we are lonely and orphaned. And only in one thing are we comforted: in the scroll of his heart. And the scroll of his heart, do you know, friend, what it is? — Take Bialik's book of poems — and meditate on it day and night. Without a shadow of rhetoric: day and night! And when you finish the book of poems, leaf through it from the beginning, for: turn it and turn it again, for everything is in it... The poet's body is dead, but his spirit dwells in the depths of our soul. We, the young pioneering generation, who adorned our souls with Bialik's shining pearls, let us not profane his pure and holy name, let his memory not vanish from us and let his life's song not end. May his poetry be for us a torch of light that will illuminate our path strewn with thorns and thistles. To ascent he called, and we shall ascend; to liberation he called, and we shall be liberated. Thus, even if we only laid a foundation, our toil is not in vain!!! May his memory be blessed!

Chastising and rebuking his people in the poetry of his wrath, and heralding tomorrow's redemption in hymns of consolation. — Prince of Hebrew literature. First and foremost in the assembly of our writers. Architect of the sanctuary of our literature's revival. A just balance in the scales of our culture. A man of all learning, a master of collections. Keeper of the keys to the treasuries of our culture, awakening and reviving slumbering generations, gathering and collecting the forgotten things of the past. A bright-eyed messenger of the people who uncovered light, revealed light to those wandering in darkness. Bialik — happy the generation that was privileged to have him — and woe to the generation from which he was taken!
