    A year has passed...

(On the first yahrzeit of our comrade Gershon)

He left us so quietly and modestly, just as his whole life's path had passed before the outside world calmly, composedly and almost as if in shadow. We, who were used to seeing the ever-cheerful Gershon with the warm-hearted smile on his lips, could hardly believe it when, on that cruel sunny morning, the terrible news struck us. It sounded like a bad dream — but it was the cruellest reality...

It was clear from the first minute: Gershon was lost not only to those closest to him and his relatives — the loss touched to the depths the whole national-Zionist camp in town, and especially those who together with him carried the burden of the day-to-day grey communal work. His share and part in all that we created with hard effort, for which it was necessary to wage a stubborn struggle, was too evident for us not to feel the heavy loss immediately. He was the man of substantial deed, who cannot bear the empty pose and superfluous words. Full of Zionist responsibility, disciplined and conscientious down to the smallest detail. Far from seeking honour, never letting himself be carried away by any personal passions when a common cause was at stake, hard-working and always ready to fulfil his duty, however hard it might be — with his departure he left in our Zionist family a void that cannot be filled!

No intimate relations bound almost any of us to him. There was simply no time for it. But one felt in him the refined person, a tactful nature with much understanding for others' shortcomings. It was no secret to anyone what a hard struggle for existence he had to wage in the last years of his young life. But he never complained to anyone. Deep in his heart he carried his worries and sorrow — even to his closest comrades he was always the ever-cheerful and good-hearted Gershon.

A year has passed, and when the figure of the unforgettable Gershon rises in our imagination, there bursts with the same force from our pressed lips that cry of pain as on that cruelly radiant morning — is it then so fated that the best among us should be so suddenly and cruelly torn from our ranks?

    G—D.

How...

(On the grave of comrade Gershon Vinik, of blessed memory)

This fine tree — how was it cut down in its bloom?

Alive, fresh and full of youth — how did his heart stop?

The good heart that shone in the light of his eyes, and the sweetness of the lips that encouraged every helpless one — how were they suddenly extinguished, how?...

Only yesterday you walked about like a brother and friend, grieving at every sorrow, quick to help and bubbling over, nimble, dear, faithful, upright, devoted, modest — how, in a night of horror, was your heart suddenly torn?

And how was the proud and lofty dream cut short, of a working people, "a humane people", and of creating a partnership for life in the bosom of our living and life-giving land?...

    On watch at his head...

    Keeping watch at his head...

Like thunder on a clear day, a year ago the terrible news swept through the town. Everyone who heard it was shaken! Such a calamity — and so suddenly! Such a disaster — and so suddenly!

At the first call of the "Hitachdut" committee, all the Zionist organisations and parties came, without any distinction. Representatives of public institutions in the town came. Heavy mourning covered every face. Old and young stood stunned. A mourning committee was chosen. Watches were organised at the head of the dead man. My comrade and I had to come for the second watch. How would we come? How would we go into his house? Shudders seized me. Only now did I begin to understand the terrible truth: yes, he is dead! He will not rise and will not come to meetings, will not voice his quiet, clear and practical proposal, will not take part in comrades' gatherings and outings; his place will be empty.

I went to the comrade with whom I happened to stand the watch. Here we are in his out-of-the-way lane. People gather around the house. The family members sob and weep. A choked voice. My comrade walks slowly and is silent. The look in his eyes terrifies me. I gathered the remnant of my strength. I went into the house. Grieving people move about like shadows; a piercing cry. Terrible widowhood. Stunning desolation. Candles burning. On the ground, wrapped in white, he lies. At his head, a guard of honour. Changing of the watches. We stand guarding at his head. I stand with bowed head and look at the body lying there. And suddenly: the deceiving imagination; here he rises before my mind's eye, alive, fresh, with his constant smile on his face. His lips speak, calming, comforting: "It's nothing, nothing at all, everything passes..." My blood froze in me. A mass of thoughts pecks at me about life and death, about the beginning and purpose of human life; I see nothing around me. I do not hear the cries of the mourners and the groans of the relatives. Before me stands he and his tragic end. Is this human life, and is this its reward?

Two older comrades came in. They approach us quickly — the third watch has come...

We parted, but his shadow accompanies me, and I will never forget those terrible moments!

    Hitachduti.
