On the thirtieth day after the death of Dr. Tsemach Shabad.

On Wednesday, 20 February, the local branch of "TOZ" held a memorial meeting, with the participation of representatives of the kehilla, public institutions and schools, for the thirtieth day after the death of the vice-chairman of the council of the "TOZ" society in Poland, Dr. Ts. Shabad. The meeting was opened by the vice-chairman of the board, Mr. Judewicz, who asked those assembled to honour the memory of the deceased by rising. The speaker said: although Dr. Ts. Shabad lived far from Warsaw, from where a public figure becomes known more quickly, nevertheless there is no corner of Jewish public life in Poland where Dr. Ts. Shabad was not known; to say nothing of the Vilna region — there the deceased held the place of honour everywhere: the kehilla, YIVO, the Central Education Committee, "TOZ" and so on. In particular Dr. Shabad contributed to the development of the Jewish health-protection movement — he established the Vilna "TOZ" as a model for all branches; institutions such as the "Drop of Milk", the counselling centre for mothers, and the splendid summer colony "Pospieszki" are an ornament to Vilna. Dr. Shabad held an important place in promoting a hygienic way of life and was for many years editor of "Folks-Gezunt". Chairman Dr. Feingold characterised the deceased as doctor and man, mentioned his achievements in the "Society for the Promotion of Enlightenment", "ORT" and his great part in the work of "TOZ" — where he found his full satisfaction. Editing for many years the medical-hygienic journal "Folks-Gezunt", he taught, enlightened and urged everyone, week in, week out, in a whole series of articles, to pay attention to questions of their own health. With this the impressive meeting closed.
