On the Thirtieth Yahrzeit of Theodor Herzl

On 20 Tammuz this year (3 July) falls the thirtieth yahrzeit of Theodor Herzl. The latest events in Jewish life have fully confirmed the predictions of the creator of the Jewish renaissance movement. As never before in recent years, antisemitism has begun to rage in almost every corner of the world. Jewry is now threatened not only with final economic ruin but with simple physical destruction. The Land of Israel has therefore become the only hope of the people and a rescue and rebirth. The land of our liberation is now being built at an extraordinary pace. We already have there a settlement of more than a quarter of a million Jews, who are creating our own national home in village and town. The drive for aliyah grows incessantly; despite all the difficulties that the English administration in the Land of Israel creates for our work of upbuilding, our achievements grow from day to day. It is now clearer than ever that Herzl's prophecy is being confirmed by the grey life of exile and by the pioneering deed of the people in its old-new land. This year on 20 Tammuz the Jewish masses will express their reverence for the founder of Zionism by beautifying his eternal monument and will plant thousands of trees in the Herzl Forest on the land of the Keren Kayemet. The Keren Kayemet headquarters in Poland is already making all necessary preparations for this year's great 20 Tammuz campaign. Specially issued stickers (nalepki) will be distributed at various prices, which will surely be bought up by the whole Jewish population. Everywhere there will be memorial services, mourning academies, etc. 20 Tammuz is the day of "afforestation of the land", the day of intensified work for the upbuilding of the land.
